DAX 40 And S&P 500 Test Mid-Range Support As Fed And ECB Loom

Both indices consolidate near channel mid-points with major central-bank decisions due this week and earnings tests under way.

Ultimo Research

European and US equity markets are trading inside defined ranges as the final week of October brings a heavy calendar of central-bank decisions and corporate results. The DAX 40 sits near 25,300, having given back Friday's gain on renewed unrest in France and pressure on European banks. The S&P 500 holds around 7,684, the horizontal support visible on the hourly chart, after Wall Street posted its worst week since June with a 5.5% drop in the Nasdaq 100 driven by concerns over artificial-intelligence funding costs. Treasury yields near 5.11% on the ten-year note continue to weigh on technology valuations, while Brent crude remains elevated near $109 per barrel on Strait of Hormuz supply risk. Sentiment is subdued ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting and a packed earnings slate that includes major technology names reporting after Wednesday's close.

The technical picture shows both indices at inflection points. The S&P 500 trades between its 7,598 and 7,706 moving averages, level with the shorter measure and inside a rising channel that has held since early August. The floor of that channel sits near 7,520, while overhead resistance appears at 7,795 to 7,835, the zone that capped the early-October rally. A daily close above that band would reopen the path toward 8,000, but for now price remains range-bound with RSI at 44 on the daily timeframe, a neutral reading that offers no directional conviction.

The DAX 40 is similarly trapped mid-range at 25,286, inside a falling channel that began at the late-August high. Price sits on its 200-day moving average near 25,269 and beneath the 25,430 and 25,678 averages. The channel ceiling near 25,650 aligns with the upper average, capping rallies, while the October low around 24,820 marks the first floor. RSI has ticked up to 48 but remains under 50, consistent with consolidation rather than a breakout. French political turbulence and weakness in European financials keep the index under pressure relative to Wall Street.

What the calendar says

The Federal Reserve announces its policy decision on 28 October at 18:00 UTC, six days out. The market assigns over a 90% probability to a rate hold at this meeting, but pricing for a December hike has strengthened after September inflation figures showed consumer prices rising 3.7% and producer prices up 6.3% year on year. Officials are in their pre-meeting blackout period until 29 October. The statement and updated projections will determine whether elevated rate expectations persist into year-end.

The European Central Bank follows with its rate decision on 29 October at 12:15 UTC. Eurozone inflation remains above target, and any guidance on the path of rates will affect the DAX and broader European equity sentiment, particularly in rate-sensitive sectors such as banks and real estate.

The Bank of Japan meets on 30 October, time not yet fixed. While that decision primarily drives the yen, any shift in Japanese monetary policy has second-order effects on global equity flows and currency hedging costs for European and US investors.

On the earnings front, results from major technology firms are due after Wednesday's US close. Those reports will test the market's tolerance for elevated capital expenditure in artificial intelligence at a time when borrowing costs are rising. A disappointing outcome would likely pressure both indices toward their respective channel floors, while strong results and resilient guidance could support a test of overhead resistance.
