EUR/USD Consolidates Below 1.1230 Ahead of Back-to-Back Central Bank Week

The pair holds a narrow range near **1.1210** with France's debt crisis capping gains while softer US Treasury yields ease dollar support.

Ultimo Research

The euro traded in a tight corridor against the dollar through the Asian and early European sessions on Friday, settling near 1.1210 after briefly touching 1.1256 and dipping to 1.1188 within the past 24 hours. Price action remains choppy and directionless as two opposing forces pull at the cross. On one side, US Treasury yields fell sharply—the benchmark 10-year dropping below the 5.0% threshold for the first time in over a month—after investors rotated out of technology stocks on concerns about artificial intelligence funding needs. That rotation stripped nearly a full quarter-point rate hike out of 2027 Federal Reserve pricing and weighed on the dollar. On the other side, French sovereign debt spreads widened to their highest level in 15 years, with the premium over German Bunds last seen this wide in November 2011 during the euro zone debt crisis. The French lower house is voting on the revenue side of the proposed 2027 budget, and both left and right factions have attached numerous amendments that markets are unlikely to welcome even if the bill passes.

Eurozone consumer confidence fell more than expected in October to -17.9 from -16.8, marking the lowest reading since May. Despite elevated energy prices and French fiscal stress, business optimism across the region has held up surprisingly well, and that resilience will be tested by Friday's flash purchasing managers' indices. The composite PMI is forecast to ease to 52.7 from 53.1, a small decline that still signals moderate expansion but one that could influence near-term sentiment if the data disappoint.

What the calendar says

Two central bank decisions dominate the week ahead, both with the power to reset EUR/USD ranges. The Federal Reserve announces its policy decision on 2026-10-28 at 18:00 UTC, five days from now. Markets currently price roughly an 80% probability that the Fed will hold rates steady at this meeting, though expectations for a December hike remain elevated. Fed officials have signaled no urgency to tighten further, but sticky inflation readings and volatile oil prices keep the door open. Just hours later, the European Central Bank delivers its own rate decision on 2026-10-29 at 12:15 UTC. Both events fall within a narrow window, and traders should expect volatility to spike as policymakers clarify their near-term paths. A full schedule of upcoming releases is available on the economic calendar.

Technical picture

The hourly chart shows EUR/USD trading inside a triangle pattern, with price oscillating between a falling resistance line near 1.1257 and rising support around 1.1189. The pair currently sits at 1.1210, just below the triangle's upper boundary. A decisive close above 1.1257 would open the door toward 1.1297, while a drop through 1.1189 would expose 1.1150 and the recent structural low at 1.1116. The 50-day moving average lies well above current price at 1.1437, reinforcing a bearish medium-term bias. Momentum indicators are neutral, with the relative strength index near 47, offering no directional conviction until the triangle resolves. Immediate resistance sits at 1.1250, with support at 1.1185. The pair has spent the past week confined to a 1.1170–1.1270 corridor, and a clean breakout in either direction would likely attract follow-through as stops are triggered.
