Gold Holds **$4,300** Ahead of Central Bank Triple-Header
XAU/USD trades near **$4,300** as the Fed, BoE and BoJ all decide rates this week, with markets split on the outcome of each.
Ultimo Research
Gold has pulled back sharply from its January peak as the possibility of renewed monetary tightening weighs on the non-yielding metal. Markets are assigning a probability close to 50% that the Fed could raise rates from the current 3.75% reference level at today's meeting, while the DXY dollar index is currently showing a strong move above the 101-point area and marking its highest level of 2026. The market-implied probability of a 25bp Bank of Japan hike stands at 61%, and the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee last voted 6-3 to hold Bank Rate, with Huw Pill, Megan Greene and Catherine Mann voting to increase it to 4%.
The confluence of hawkish risks from three major central banks in the span of 48 hours makes this week one of the most consequential for rates markets this year. The environment of elevated energy prices and persistent inflation has shifted expectations from cuts to hikes across developed markets.
What the calendar says
2026-09-16 18:00 UTC — The Federal Reserve announces its interest rate decision at 2:00 PM Eastern Time (18:00 UTC), along with the Summary of Economic Projections and the dot plot. The decision will shape the direction for EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, gold, BTC/USD and ETH/USD. With the labor market steady and energy prices keeping inflation elevated, it's widely expected that the Federal Reserve will vote to raise the federal funds rate for the first time since 2023.
2026-09-17 11:00 UTC — The Bank of England interest rate decision is announced at 12:00pm London time (11:00 UTC). This will move GBP/USD. The BoE is predicted to hold interest rates again, with most economists expecting rates to remain at 3.75% for the rest of 2026.
2026-09-18 (time not fixed) — The Bank of Japan gathers on Sept. 17-18 for its policy meeting. The Bank of Japan is leaning toward raising its benchmark interest rate by a quarter point this month in response to upward price risks, with BOJ officials mulling an increase in the policy rate from 1% at the two-day meeting. This will move USD/JPY.
