Gold Consolidates at $4,320 After Fed's 25-bp Hike Before BoE and BoJ Decisions

XAU/USD trades near $4,320 after Fed's 25-bp hike, with Bank of England and Bank of Japan meetings set to shake G10 rates.

Ultimo Research

Gold is trading around $4,320 per ounce on the hourly chart, consolidating after the Federal Reserve raised its target range by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00% on September 16. The central bank signalled at least one more rate hike this year to curb persistently high inflation, weighing on the non-yielding metal even as UK inflation climbed from 2.6% in June to 2.9% in July 2026 and Middle East supply risks keep energy markets fragile.

The chart shows hourly candles oscillating between a $4,250 floor established in the second week of September and resistance near $4,500 that capped the first week of the month. The recent pullback from $4,638 on 27 August has left price trapped in a descending channel through most of the range visible on the one-hour frame. Current price action sits in the lower half of that pattern, with $4,280 marking the most recent session low and $4,370 the nearest point of resistance overhead.

What the calendar says

Two major central-bank decisions land in the next 36 hours, both capable of shifting rate differentials and volatility across currencies and precious metals.

The Bank of England announces its decision on Thursday, 17 September 2026 at 12:00 UK time, which is 11:00 UTC. The BoE is predicted to hold interest rates again at 3.75%, but the last vote was 6-3 with three policymakers wanting a rise to 4.00%. A shift of just two votes would deliver a hike instead of a hold, and inflation has climbed back to 2.9%, leaving the outcome more open than in recent meetings. The decision bears directly on GBP/USD.

The Bank of Japan meeting runs on 17 and 18 September, with the Statement on Monetary Policy scheduled for 18 September. The policy statement is typically released around midday Tokyo time, with the Governor's press conference at 3:30pm JST. Recent surveys show 89 percent consensus for a quarter-point move, which would take the policy rate from 0.75% to 1.00%. The decision will drive USD/JPY and could spill into broader risk sentiment if Governor Ueda's remarks surprise.

Gold: watching central-bank divergence

Price is currently near $4,320, just above the $4,280 level that has acted as support through the Asian and early European sessions on 17 September.

Resistance overhead begins at $4,370, the high from the prior session, then $4,440, which corresponds roughly to the middle of the range that has contained trade since early September. A clearance above that level would target $4,500 and potentially the $4,638 high from late August. On the downside, a break of $4,280 opens $4,250, the multi-session low, and then $4,200 if selling accelerates.

Gold rose to 4,307.31 USD/t.oz on 17 September 2026, up 1.02% from the previous day, recovering a portion of losses after the Fed decision. The metal remains sensitive to rate differentials; with the Fed now at 3.75%-4.00%, the BoE likely holding at 3.75%, and the BoJ expected to lift from 0.75% to 1.00%, the carry dynamics and dollar path will matter more than the absolute levels. Our in-house signal engine currently reads Buy for gold, consistent with dip interest below $4,300, though that technical stance does not override the macro risk embedded in the next 24 hours of central-bank communication.

Broader conditions for gold include the Bank of England expected to leave borrowing costs unchanged, while the Bank of Japan is set to raise rates, and the ECB raised borrowing costs for the second time this year last week.
