How to Open a Forex Trading Account

Opening a forex trading account with a regulated broker takes about ten minutes of form-filling, two documents, and a verification wait that is usually measured in hours. This guide explains what is asked, why, and what happens between submitting the application and placing the first trade — using our own process as the example, since it is the one we can describe exactly.
What you will be asked for
Every regulated broker collects the same core information, because the regulator requires it. The order and wording differ; the substance does not.
Contact details and a password. An email address you control, a mobile number, and a password. The email is where verification, statements and security notices go; the number is used for confirmation codes.
Identity. Full name, date of birth and nationality, matching a government-issued document. This is the "Know Your Customer" requirement that applies to every financial institution.
Residence. Your country and address. Brokers are licensed to serve some countries and not others, so the answer determines whether an account can be opened at all. Our application checks this early, before you have spent time on the rest.
Financial background. Employment status, income range and source of funds. This is not a credit check; it exists so the broker can assess whether leveraged trading is appropriate for you, and so that later deposits can be reconciled with a declared source.
Trading experience. Which instruments you have traded and for how long. An honest "none" is an acceptable answer; it affects the warnings you are shown, not whether you are accepted.
Tax residence and public-office status. Where you pay tax, and whether you or a close family member hold a public position. Both are standard regulatory questions.
Agreements. The client agreement, risk disclosure and privacy policy. Ours are published in full on the legal documentation page; the risk disclosure is the one to read before deciding.
Our application runs through these as seven short steps — account, personal, residence, financial, experience, tax and public-office status, review — and saves progress, so it can be finished from another device.
The two documents
Verification needs proof of identity and proof of address. A passport or national identity card covers the first. A utility bill, bank statement or government letter dated within the last three months, showing your name and the address you entered, covers the second. Both are uploaded as photographs or scans from the portal after the application is submitted; a clear phone photograph is fine as long as all four corners and the full text are visible.
The most common reason verification is delayed is a mismatch between the address on the form and the address on the document, or a document that has expired. Checking both before uploading saves a day.
What happens next
The application is reviewed by a person, not only by software. At Ultimo this is normally completed within one business day of both documents arriving; the portal shows the current status and emails you when it changes. Once approved, a MetaTrader 5 login is issued and the account can be funded.
Two things are worth doing while waiting. First, download MetaTrader 5 and open a demo account; the demo uses the same platform and the same prices, and the MetaTrader 5 guides walk through placing, protecting and closing a trade. Second, read the trading conditions and decide which account type suits you; the Standard versus Raw guide does the arithmetic.
Funding the account
Approved accounts are funded by bank wire in USD or EUR, or by cryptocurrency. The minimum deposit is USD 100 on every method. Wires take one to three business days and carry no fee from us; crypto deposits credit once the network confirms them, usually within the hour. The deposits and withdrawals page lists the exact steps, and the crypto funding guide covers the one mistake in that process that cannot be undone: sending on the wrong network.
Withdrawals return to the source they came from. A deposit made by wire is withdrawn by wire to the same account; this is an anti-money-laundering rule, not a preference.
Questions people ask at this stage
Do I need to deposit to open the account? No. The account is opened and verified first; funding is a separate step and can wait.
Can I open more than one account? Yes — several trading accounts under one verified profile, for example one Standard and one Raw, or a separate account for a different strategy.
What if my country is not accepted? The application says so at the residence step, before any documents are uploaded. The list is set by the licence and cannot be overridden by support.
Is there a minimum trade size? The instrument's minimum volume, shown in its contract specification; for most forex pairs it is 0.01 lots.
How long until I can trade? Typically the same or the next business day: minutes to apply, hours to a day for verification, then funding time depending on the method.
A note on risk: the account is the easy part. Forex and CFDs are leveraged products and most retail accounts lose money; the risk management guide and the position size calculator are the two things to use before the first live trade, not after it.
